Hornet or wasp?

Hornets aren’t as common as some other insects in the UK, despite what you may have read in the press. However, they can cause problems on some properties. They are much larger than wasps, although some people do still get them confused. A good tip is to look at their markings: they have very distinctive yellow and brown stripes on the abdomen, whereas a wasp has yellow and black markings. If you aren’t sure what kind of insect nest you have in your property and don’t want to get too close to confirm your suspicions, we will be happy to identify them for you.

Are hornets dangerous?

Hornets aren’t any more dangerous than wasps – again, that’s something that sensationalist new stories have tended to exaggerate. However, they can be aggressive if their nest is disturbed, and their stings can be painful. Sometimes, someone who has been stung may suffer a severe allergic reaction. This can be something that is very hard to predict, so it makes sense to eradicate a hornet colony as soon as you notice any signs of an issue on your property. That’s where our hornet control specialists come in.

What does a hornet’s nest look like?

So, what does a hornet’s nest look like? They are papery in their appearance, as the nest is made up of wood pulp that the hornets have chewed. They can vary in size, with nests treated in the summer months much smaller than those that have gone unnoticed until the autumn. The signs of a hornet’s nest on your property are a steady stream of them travelling in and out of your home, usually through one single access point. Hornets favour areas like roof spaces, wall cavities and air brick to build their nests, and they can also be found in sheds.
